Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, aged 78, was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington on Monday after developing a fever, according to a statement from his office. Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, Angel Urena, shared the news on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, stating that the former president was undergoing testing and observation but "remains in good spirits."
This is not the first time Clinton has faced significant health challenges. In October 2021, he was hospitalized for five nights due to a blood infection, later identified as sepsis stemming from a urological issue. Earlier in his life, Clinton underwent major heart surgeries, including a quadruple bypass in 2004 when he was 58 years old. Six years later, he had stents placed in his coronary artery to address additional heart concerns. These health events prompted him to adopt a healthier lifestyle, including embracing a largely vegetarian diet, and he has since spoken publicly about his efforts to prioritize wellness.
Clinton’s health also drew public attention in November 2022 when he tested positive for COVID-19. At the time, he reported only mild symptoms and expressed gratitude for being vaccinated and boosted, which he credited for his swift recovery.
Clinton served two terms as the 42nd president of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Known for his economic policies and political acumen, his presidency also faced significant controversy, including the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which led to his impeachment by the House of Representatives in 1998. However, he was acquitted by the Senate and left office with high approval ratings. At the time of his election, Clinton was among the youngest presidents in U.S. history, and today, he remains the second-youngest living former president after Barack Obama.
Born in the same year as former President George W. Bush and President-elect Donald Trump, Clinton has continued to play an active role in public life since leaving the White House. Through the Clinton Foundation, he has led numerous initiatives addressing global health, economic inequality, and climate change, solidifying his reputation as a prominent figure in humanitarian efforts.
Clinton’s hospitalization on Monday has raised concerns, but his office’s assurance that he is "in good spirits" provides some comfort. As doctors at Georgetown University Medical Center conduct further evaluations, updates on his condition are expected in the coming days.
