Court Issues Notice to PM and Ministers Over Greece Boat Tragedy

A trial court in Sukkur has issued notices to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in connection with the tragic boat capsizing incident near Greece last month, which resulted in the deaths of at least five Pakistani immigrants.

On Monday, Sukkur's additional district and sessions judge-II issued the notices while hearing a petition seeking the registration of a criminal case against the Prime Minister and other officials. The court has instructed the respondents to appear in court on January 15.

The petition was filed by local lawyer Advocate Muhammad Ali Shah, who requested the court to direct the Rohri police station to file an FIR based on his complaint. In the petition, Shah held the federal government accountable for the deaths, arguing that the poor economic conditions in Pakistan push people to seek employment abroad, and that the government’s failure to regulate human trafficking has worsened the situation.

Shah also urged the court to order the police to register an FIR under section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The application was submitted under Sections 22-A and 22-B of CrPC.

The notices will be delivered to the Prime Minister and ministers via the National Assembly Speaker, instructing them to appear in person before the court on the scheduled hearing date of January 15.

The tragic incident occurred on December 14, when a wooden boat carrying migrants capsized off the island of Gavdos in southern Greece, resulting in the loss of at least five Pakistani lives.
