Former US President Donald Trump has expressed his intention to re-establish contact with North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, upon returning to the White House. In an interview on Thursday, Trump was asked if he planned to reach out to Kim and replied affirmatively, saying, “I will, yeah. He liked me.”

Trump and Kim shared an unusually strong relationship during Trump’s first term, despite the decades-long tensions between the two nations since the Korean War. Trump has often described their connection as “very, very good” and referred to Kim as a “smart guy.” Between 2018 and 2019, Trump met with Kim three times, marking a historic phase in US-North Korea relations. In 2019, he became the first sitting US president to step into North Korea since the armistice of 1953.

Following his re-election, Trump’s team hinted at the possibility of reopening direct negotiations with Kim. However, Trump’s rapport with the North Korean leader has previously sparked tensions with South Korea, a key US ally, and has sometimes caused friction within his own administration.
