EU Warns Pakistan Over Rice Export Quality Standards
KARACHI: The European Union has issued a warning to Pakistan regarding potential disruptions in rice imports, with the EU expressing concerns about the quality standards of rice exports from Pakistan. In response, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, held a meeting with the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) in Karachi on Friday to address the issue.
Rana Tanveer Hussain underscored the EU's heightened sensitivity to quality standards and emphasized the urgent need to address these concerns to prevent a halt in rice imports. "We need to address these issues proactively to ensure smooth exports," the minister said, stressing the importance of meeting international quality standards to sustain exports.
In a statement, the minister reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the export sector, stating, "The Prime Minister and the entire government stand with the business community. When you thrive, it benefits the economy and reaches the labor force."
During the meeting, rice exporters voiced their frustrations over undue pressure from government institutions, particularly due to repeated requests for years-old records and unnecessary meetings. This has led to anxiety among business owners. Acknowledging these concerns, Minister Hussain reassured the exporters, saying, "You are respected and vital for the country's economy." He also assured that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) would refrain from unnecessary contact with the business community, recognizing the importance of the rice exporters in Pakistan's economic framework.
The exporters also urged the government to grant the rice export sector industry status, citing the sector's export revenues, which range from $2 billion to $4 billion annually. They also called for the establishment of weighbridges at ports or negotiations with commercial weighbridge operators to secure concessional rates, pointing out the importance of having proper infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency.
Minister Hussain further encouraged rice exporters to embrace modern technologies and upgrade their systems to enhance competitiveness in the global market, ensuring Pakistan’s rice exports remain attractive to international buyers.
