Scott Turner Confirmed as US Housing Secretary
The US Senate has confirmed former NFL player Scott Turner as the new Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Donald Trump administration. Turner, who previously played for the Washington Redskins, Denver Broncos, and San Diego Chargers, was confirmed by a 55-44 vote. He is the only black cabinet member in Trump's current administration.
Turner's Background and Political Experience
Turner served as the executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump’s first term and was previously a Texas state legislator. During his Senate testimony, he spoke about his humble beginnings working as a dishwasher and his commitment to tackling the US housing crisis.
Challenges at HUD
With a $70 billion budget and over 10,000 employees, HUD plays a crucial role in addressing homelessness, assisting renters and homeowners, and preventing housing discrimination. Turner described the agency as “broken” and emphasized the need for reforms, including bringing employees back to the office.
Responsibilities of HUD
Rental assistance for over two million families
Management of 790,000 public housing units
Mortgage and loan insurance programs
Block grants for low-income housing and community development
Political and Public Reactions
Only two Democrats, Peter Welch and John Fetterman, supported Turner's confirmation. The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment expressed its willingness to work with Turner to ensure stable funding and support for affordable housing initiatives.
As Turner takes charge, his leadership will be closely watched amid the ongoing housing crisis and rising homelessness in the US.
