Fernandes and Amorim Express Frustration After United's Draw at Liverpool
Bruno Fernandes and Manchester United's manager, Ruben Amorim, were left disappointed despite the team's solid 2-2 draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Fernandes, visibly frustrated, insisted that if United could perform at this level against a top team like Liverpool, they should be capable of doing it consistently across all matches. After Lisandro Martinez's unexpected goal gave United an early lead, Liverpool responded through Cody Gakpo and a Mohamed Salah penalty. However, Amad Diallo's late equalizer saved United from defeat.
Though United showed strength in the final stages of the match, a missed opportunity by Harry Maguire – failing to convert a chance in the dying seconds – left them with only a point. While Liverpool remains six points clear at the top of the table, United, in 13th place, ended their four-match losing streak.
Fernandes shared his disappointment, stating, “We’ve been criticized, and rightly so, based on our position in the table. Even today, we can’t be satisfied with just one point. We had the chance to win, but in the end, it’s a fair result. Both teams played good football, but we must do more. We have to bring this level of intensity to every match, not just against top teams like Liverpool."
The Portuguese midfielder also reflected on next week’s FA Cup clash against Arsenal, emphasizing their desire to reach the final again. “We gave everything today, and that effort must continue. We need to carry this level of play into the next match. If we can do it against Liverpool, we must do it everywhere."
Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk expressed disappointment with dropping points at home, especially after conceding the equalizer. He acknowledged that Liverpool struggled to control possession and needed to be more decisive in future games.
At the same time, Amorim, who has had a tough start at Old Trafford, remarked that the team’s competitiveness against Liverpool was a step in the right direction. However, he expressed frustration over previous performances and stressed that United needed to replicate the fight and intensity shown today in future matches.
"We’ve shown we can compete at this level, but we need to apply it to all matches," said Amorim. "It’s not just the players, but everyone involved in the club. We need to make sure we bring the same level of intensity every time. Today, we fought for everything, and that’s the attitude we need moving forward."
